Today, it's pretty common among bloggers, Facebook guests, and other Internet outlets to ask visitors to - FOLLOW them online. The U.S. Army Infantry's infamous insignia and slogan at Fort Benning coined the phrase "Follow Me," on a shoulder patch revealing an Infantryman's with an outstretched hand.
It shouldn't surprise us that Jesus also used this phrase, not as a matter, of promoting the phrase to gain publicity or notoriety, but to reveal a man's desire to genuinely follow Jesus' examples.
In the book of Matthew, Jesus calls Simon and Andrew saying, come "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." Simon (Peter) and Andrew both drop their nets and leave their profession behind to follow Jesus. Shortly, thereafter, and he calls James and John and they too follow Jesus, leaving their boats, nets, and families behind. Eventually, he calls twelve men who all leave the former things of this world behind to follow Jesus. So goes the song, "I have decided to follow Jesus; No turning back, no turning back."
Not everyone did as the disciples did. Some followed Jesus for a short time, curious about Jesus activities, intrigued by his miracle, or just plain interested in his ability to heal others. Regardless, of the reason for following Jesus, their interest was short lived. John 6:66 KJV says, "From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him." The word "Disciple" refers to those who were following but not with the desire to do anything more than walk along side from a distance. They had no genuine interest in striking up a relationship with Jesus or following his examples.
Men today can find themselves doing the same thing, walking alongside from a distance never desiring to have an intimate relationship or to genuinely follow Jesus. Are you following Jesus? Is it a genuine relationship? or are you just walking along side from a distance? It is my prayer that men everywhere will choose to follow Jesus, having a genuine relationship with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. If you will, you will discover a life whereby your cup will runneth over with God's blessings. That's not to say you won't have any troubles, only that God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit will be there by your side when troubles come your way.
